Galle Lighthouse

established by the British in 1848, the initial lighthouse was a 24-meter-high iron structure that

was unfortunately destroyed by a fire in 1934. The current lighthouse, completed in 1939,

stands as an elegant, 26.5-meter-tall (87 feet) white masonry tower that remains fully

operational, flashing its vital navigation beam across the treacherous shallow reefs of Galle

harbor every few seconds.

The lighthouse is beautifully positioned, framed by a row of tall, swaying emerald palm trees on

one side and the breaking waves of the ocean on the other. It overlooks a small, sandy beach

where local families gather to swim in the shallow, reef-protected waters.

While the interior of the tower is closed to the public to protect the active light machinery, the

base of the lighthouse serves as the central gathering point within the fort. Late in the

afternoon, as the heat breaks, travelers and locals walk along the ramparts to gather at the base

of the tower. Street vendors sell slices of fresh mango seasoned with chili and salt, families fly

colorful kites in the sea breeze, and photographers set up tripods to capture the classic image of

the white tower silhouetted against a brilliant crimson and orange tropical sunset.
