Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi

King Devanampiya Tissa, this sacred southern branch of the historical Bodhi tree (Ficus religiosa)

under which Gautama Buddha attained supreme enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, India, was

brought to Sri Lanka by Theri Sangamitta, the daughter of Emperor Ashoka the Great. For nearly

2,300 years, through foreign invasions, internal civil wars, and shifting capital cities, the tree has

been continuously guarded and cared for by an unbroken lineage of dedicated Buddhist monks

and royal caretakers.

The sacred tree is situated on a raised, multi-tiered earthen terrace inside a beautifully designed

temple complex. The tree's oldest and most revered branch is supported by a series of elegant,

gold-plated steel pillars to protect it from high winds and the weight of time.

The temple is surrounded by a low wall designed to protect the roots, while a broad stone

courtyard offers space for thousands of pilgrims who gather daily to meditate. Visitors must

remove their shoes at the outer gates and walk barefoot onto the sun-warmed stone floors. The

atmosphere here is deeply meditative; the air is heavy with the scent of jasmine flowers and

burning coconut oil lamps, while the gentle rustling of the tree's heart-shaped leaves creates a

soothing sound that blends with the soft chanting of the devotees. It serves as a living

connection to the very dawn of Buddhism on the island, remaining one of the most sacred

pilgrimage sites on earth.
