Victoria Park

research grounds for the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, the park was renamed in 1897 to

commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It has been meticulously preserved as

a classic English public park, complete with uniform flower beds, paved walking paths, and

expansive lawns.

The park is a paradise for plant lovers and flower enthusiasts. Due to Nuwara Eliya's cool

climate, Victoria Park flourishes with colorful foreign flora, including bright roses, orchids,

dahlias, and petunias that burst into full bloom during the April holiday season.

Victoria Park is also globally recognized by birdwatchers as an exceptional urban bird

sanctuary. The park’s tall oak trees, dense shrubs, and quiet streams provide a vital habitat for

rare alpine bird species, including the endemic Sri Lanka white-eye, the colorful Indian pitta,

the pied thrush, and the rare Kashmir flycatcher, which migrates to the park during the winter

months. Walking through the quiet paths of the park offers a peaceful escape, where the only

sounds are the chirping of rare birds and the gentle rustling of the wind through the old trees.
