Weligama Bay Surfing

4-kilometer crescent-shaped bay features a soft, sandy bottom and is uniquely oriented to catch

consistent swell while remaining protected from strong coastal winds, creating exceptionally

consistent waves year-round.

Weligama is recognized as one of the best beaches in South Asia to learn how to surf. The sandy

floor means there are no sharp coral reefs or rocks to worry about, and the long, rolling beach

breaks produce predictable waves that are ideal for beginners practicing their balance. The

entire length of the beach is lined with colorful wood-framed surf schools, independent

instructors, and board rental shacks.

Every morning, the bay fills with surfers paddling out into the surf. For advanced surfers, the

outer edges of the bay and nearby points offer faster, hollow reef breaks that provide a fun

challenge. The surrounding beach town features a vibrant surf-village atmosphere, packed with

surf camps, health cafes serving smoothie bowls, and casual hangout spots where travelers
